The History of Richards Tire

Founded in 1977, Richards Tire is located at 1813 US 31 North in Petoskey, MI as an automotive repair, tire, and wheel center. We have spent the last years delivering auto repairs, tires, and wheels to satisfied customers. You can come see us in person, or schedule an appointment online today from the comfort of your couch.

Our dad owned a tire store in Detroit, Michigan for roughly 40 years. Rich worked alongside him for the last 15 of those years. When the business was sold, Rich moved 265 miles north to Petoskey, Michigan. He started out working from the basement and garage of his home before renting space in a mini‑warehouse.

From there, he moved into the Hunt Roofing building, where Carl Smith gave him a tremendous opportunity by offering a stable location with a roof over his head at a very reasonable rate. Frank joined Rich in 1986 to help grow the business. He still remembers days when the phone wouldn't ring at all.

In the early years, the work focused mainly on farm service. Over time, the business expanded into passenger and light truck tires, followed by brakes, suspension work, and wheel alignments. Eventually, they moved into their current 3,840 sq. ft. location on US‑31 in Petoskey and later added an additional 4,320 sq. ft. warehouse.
